- Successful recent deployments have proven CSignum’s potential for achieving reliable, continuous monitoring across ‘extreme’ river conditions, in lakes and even under ice, demonstrating the flexibility of CSignum’s wireless system
- CSignum’s patented electromagnetic field signalling modems (EM-2) allow integration to a range of industry leading sondes and monitoring equipment that enables simple recovery and maintenance at mandated intervals
Edinburgh – 2 March 2026: The CSignum team will be available to share feedback and learnings from recent deployment projects across the UK, Europe and the US at a trio of SWIG events this month.
Results from these extensive tests conclusively demonstrate that CSignum’s cable-free continuous water quality monitoring solution (CWQM) successfully delivers reliable real-time data from the riverbed in extreme conditions, addressing the monitoring and compliance challenges of Section 82 of the UK Environmental Act.
This is delivered by utilising one compact EM-2 device on the riverbed with an integrated sonde and battery pack, and a second EM-2 in a topside gateway with a telemetry device and battery pack. The gateway device can be located up to 100M away from the in-river system.
From inland rivers to frozen lakes, the EM-2 modems achieve a breakthrough in wireless monitoring that:
- installs discreetly on the riverbed
- integrates with leading sondes and monitoring devices
- has low environmental and visual impact
- is suitable for installation/deployment in difficult catchment locations with high footfall, and environments susceptible to vandalism or high risk of flooding
- enables quick and easy deployment of integrated sensor packages on the riverbed, eliminating the need for extensive riverbank infrastructure
- raises the equipment to the surface for maintenance at the push of a button
- securely transmits data to the cloud or directly to water companies’ SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems
- ensures dependable data transmission from submerged sensors to the topside gateway, even through challenging mediums including fresh and salt water, ice, concrete, and rock
An important factor is that the system is designed to be environmentally friendly, non-disruptive to existing eco-systems and to be practically invisible from the surface. Its low visibility and low impact installation supports landowner acceptance by providing the option to deploy from either riverbank, minimising visible infrastructure that mitigates vandalism, tampering and theft.
Graeme Boyce, Chief Operating Officer, CSignum, said,
“Pollution from combined sewer overflows, agriculture, and industry is pushing rivers, reservoirs, and coastal waters to breaking point. Regulations like the UK Environment Act 2021 demand continuous, reliable monitoring. However, traditional wired systems are costly, vulnerable to vandalism, and disruptive to ecosystems.
“We utilised our insights from working closely with the UK water industry and organisations responsible for monitoring water quality to design a solution that addresses all the challenges of real life CWQM deployment.
“The combination of the underwater EM-2Q and the bankside EM-2G gateway provides a powerful and reliable system that is suitable for use in any river, lake or underwater environment. It is especially effective in challenging environments where wired alternatives are difficult to deploy, or they are susceptible to flooding or vandalism”, the protection of fisheries, and environmental compliance.”
CSignum is a proud member of Sensors for Water Interest Group (SWIG), a not-for-profit UK network that brings together manufacturers, researchers and end-users in the water sensing world, helping them swap ideas, collaborate and push forward sensor tech for water quality and wastewater monitoring.
